What's new in South Miami?

I've all the juicy "deets" for anyone who wants to know!

Bearing the title "The City of Pleasant Living," South Miami dazzles locals with urban creature comforts, the charm of a tightly-knit community, and Mother Nature's dazzling beauty, upholding not just Miami's famed collegiate lifestyle but also the premium quality of living it's known for.

And now, armed with forward-thinking initiatives, upcoming community projects, new affordable residential developments, and trendy dining spots, this high-spirited neighborhood shows everyone just why it's one of Miami's rising cities!

Here are 4 things new to watch for in South Miami.

The Shops At Sunset Place No More?

Where: 5701 Sunset Dr #350, South Miami, FL 33143

When: TBA

Is The Shops At Sunset Place nearing the end of its days?

Since opening in 1999, The Shops at Sunset Place has been a select destination for food, shopping, and entertainment.

Today, the once-bustling shopping spot is a virtually empty building with little to no traffic, and the City of South Miami is cooking up plans to do something about it.

In fact, with a few tweaks and a little fine-tuning, you may see a redevelopment for South Miami's beloved Shops at Sunset Place on the horizon.

Although nothing is set in stone, the city is anticipating transforming The Shops at Sunset Place into a mixed-use destination with residential, retail, and dining spaces through the help of Midtown Equities, the chosen developer for the project.

That said, area residents will have to live with the Shops at Sunset Place's current state for some time, as the process to approve the said plan will likely take about four years, and the city is still waiting for the developers to submit their plans.

So, hang on tight, Miamians, and keep your eyes peeled for updates!

The Parks Of South Miami Are Undergoing A Major Revamp, And Here's What We Know So Far —

Where: across South Miami

When: 2024

In 2023, the City of South Miami launched a plan to rejuvenate a few parks across the city, specifically Brewer Park, Dante Fascell Park, Marshall Williamson Park, Murray Park, and South Miami Park.

To date, Brewer Park's (6300 SW 56th St.) tennis, basketball, and hardball-racquetball courts have already been resurfaced and restriped, and its west hardball wall has been demolished and converted into a pickleball court with soundproof material along the fence line.

Dante Fascell Park's (8600 Red Rd.) basketball half-court, Marshall Williamson Park's (6125 SW 68th St.) tennis court, and Murray Park's (5800 SW 66th St.) basketball court also received the same resurfacing and restriping.

You may have also noticed that two pickleball courts replaced Marshall Williamson Park's west tennis court and Murray Park's south basketball court with a volleyball court.

But the most significant project the city is anticipating is for South Miami Park (4300 SW 58th Ave.), as it will receive new field lights, picnic shelters, a turf field, and a combo restroom-concession facility, all slated to finish this year and in 2025!

What else is in store for South Miami's beloved recreational spots?

Let's wait and see!

South Miami's Kennedy-era Winn Dixie Is Transforming Into A Mixed-Use Project!

Where: 5850 SW 73rd St., Miami, FL 33143

When: 2025

South Miami's Winn-Dixie, a national supermarket chain that has stood since President John F. Kennedy was in the White House, is being replaced with a mixed-use project, and it's almost near completion!

The said mixed-use development is called Avalon South Miami, and its construction started in 2023 and will rise by the end of 2025.

And once it does, South Miami locals will welcome 290 luxury apartments and 31,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space, including a 27,000-square-foot grocery store.

Meanwhile, Avalon South Miami residents can also expect a resident lounge, private dining room, pool deck, fitness center, and wellness terrace.

More updates as soon as we get them!

SoBe's Sriracha House Is Here In South Miami!

Where: 5966 S Dixie Hwy, South Miami, FL 33143

When: Happening Now!

South Beach's beloved Sriracha House, a fast-casual restaurant recognized for its innovative take on Southeast Asian-inspired wok dishes, has taken over South Miami — and so far, they're doing a pretty fine job of staying on top!

In fact, its new establishment at 5966 South Dixie Highway, the third one in South Florida, has been all the rave since opening in January, with South Miamians getting their spicy fix without having to trek to SoBe or drive to Doral's Shoma Bazaar!

And what's even better is that Sriracha House's menu promotes healthy, freshly made dishes, showing everyone that fast-casual doesn't always mean fried and oily!

Indeed, millennials have found a NEW safe space in South Miami!
